In ancient times, Gissi had a castle that, according to sources, dates back to the 11th century. A papal bull from 1208 also spoke of a castrum of Gissi. The castle, which housed the governor, the armory, and the stables, collapsed in 1742. The Municipal seat is located inside Palazzo Carunchio, a noble building that rose on the remains of the convent of San Francesco d'Assisi, dating back to the 13th century, of which walls, cisterns, and wells still remain. Proceeding along Salita Castello, one emerges onto Via La Chiesa, where the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to 1568, is located.
