MONTEMITRO
The village is located in the center of Molise at an altitude of 500 m, along the valley of the Trigno River, and is only 26 km from the Adriatic Sea beaches, 60 km from ski resorts, 100 km from Pescara airport, and 250 km from Rome airport.
Located in the province of Campobasso, Montemitro is a hilly municipality of medieval structure, formerly inhabited by Croatian refugees from Dalmatia who, in the 15th century, repopulated some areas of Molise.
The Croatians who wanted to escape the Ottoman invasion were welcomed by local rulers and the Church as early as the 15th century to repopulate the lands of Molise devastated by earthquakes and epidemics. However, the existence of Montemitro is also documented in earlier times: indeed, the first historically verified news dates back to 1024, when the Benedictines in their Chronicle of the Monastery of Casino mentioned the Castle of Monte Metulo.
Later, the place was identified as Mons Mitulus (1150-1278), Mons Miletus (1328), and Monte Mitulo, until the current name Montemitro derived from Montemitolo or Montemitoli.
Even today, in this village, the ancient Dalmatian language, called “na-nez,” is spoken.
